Microsoft 365 Business Standard vs Microsoft 365 Business Premium

Posted by Connor Macdonald | 30-Jul-2020 17:21:48

Microsoft 365 is designed to bring together Office 365, Windows 10, and Enterprise Mobility and Security, which aims to support the functionality of your business’s day to day tasks. Previously known as Office 365, Microsoft have now rebranded to Microsoft 365 offering packages with more advanced security and device management. From the 21st April 2020, two packages that have been adapted are Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Microsoft 365 Business Premium, which offer similar support apart from advanced cyber threat protection.

What is Microsoft 365 Business Standard?

Microsoft 365 Business Standard (previously known as Office 365 Business Premium) is a package for organisations who require Office applications across multiple devices, with the addition of business email, cloud file storage and online meetings and chat. The current price of the package is £9.40 (per user/month) with a one-month free trial.

What is Microsoft 365 Business Premium?

Microsoft 365 Business Premium (previously known as Microsoft 365 Business) includes everything that the Microsoft 365 Business Standard package has to offer with the additional add-ons of advanced cyber threat protection and device management, improving security for your business environment. The current price of the package is £15.10 (per user/month) with a one-month free trial.

Is Microsoft 365 Business Premium worth the extra cost?

The alterations to the package listed below focus on Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) and features allowing you to easily manage devices throughout your organisation, which Microsoft 365 Business Standard does not provide.

Intune
Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based service which concentrates on mobile device management (MDM) and mobile application management (MAM). It gives organisations the ability to regulate how your devices are utilised, that includes mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.

Azure Information Protection
Enable collaboration of your emails, documents and sensitive data both internally and externally, by encryption, restricted access and rights to provide additional protection.

Defender
Provides Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) by offering a complete, ongoing and up to date defence. This helps mitigate threats such as malware, viruses and spyware over your apps, emails, the web and cloud.

Conditional Access
Conditional Access is the feature of Azure AD that allows you to impose control over access to apps within your organisation through certain conditions that can be set and regulated from a central location.

Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD)
This service is an all-inclusive desktop and app virtualisation service. WVD offers the complete Windows 10 desktop experience on any device or browser, thus allowing your members of staff to work effectively and securely from any location. This feature is even more important within the current working environment, as more of us are working remotely.

These additional elements do come with an extra cost, however with cybercriminals becoming more and more advanced in their approach to accessing company data and a number are now focusing on the vulnerabilities of packages that do not offer as much protection (Microsoft 365 Business Standard). This re-emphasises the importance of the features above, as your business will be able to defend against threats, thus giving you the peace of mind that your information is being safeguarded.

How do I measure my ROI on this?

Microsoft 365 Business Premium comes with several advantageous factors that can help your organisation thrive. When implementing such features, a number of variables could be accessed to gain an understanding of your Return on Investment.

  • Productivity - more time invested in your organisation’s day to day tasks, rather than dealing with security threats

  • Mobility - improved efficiency and time to market due to ‘anywhere access’

  • Control - enabling conditional access on devices, ensures staff can work remotely

  • Communication - increased collaboration time through features such as Teams and Outlook

Our conclusion and AZTech’s recommendation

The main benefit of Microsoft 365 Business Premium is the advance on security. Currently Microsoft 365 Business Standard package does not offer any advanced protection over the apps/services included, therefore the risk of a data breach and overall threat to your organisation is increased. The Microsoft 365 Business Premium allows greater protection over your working environment, which is now even more at risk due to the cybercriminals becoming aware of the vulnerability of Microsoft’s lower tier packages.

Due to the level of threats present in this day and age, we would thoroughly recommend the upgrade, as it is paramount to protect your Microsoft 365 tenant as best you can. This is a small cost, in comparison to the level of damage that could be suffered.
