Do we still need a firewall if we are mostly in Microsoft 365 and Azure?

Yes. Cloud adoption changes what the firewall does, it does not remove the need for one. FAQs

What is a next-generation firewall (NGFW) and do we need one?
Yes - traditional packet-filter firewalls have not been adequate for years. An NGFW adds application awareness, intrusion prevention (IPS), SSL/TLS inspection, integrated threat intelligence and identity-based policy on top of stateful filtering. NCSC guidance and Cyber Essentials both assume the boundary device is doing more than blocking ports, and modern attacker tradecraft - malicious web traffic, command-and-control over HTTPS, living-off-the-land binaries - needs that deeper inspection to be caught.
Is an on-premises firewall enough when most of our work happens in the cloud?
On its own, no. Users now work from home, on the move and across SaaS apps that never touch the office network. A firewall at the office edge still matters for the LAN, but you also need cloud-delivered firewall capability (FWaaS) and Secure Service Edge controls so traffic from remote users gets the same inspection, filtering and threat intel as traffic from head office. Most modern deployments are a hybrid of the two.
Which firewall vendors do you support?
We are vendor-agnostic and regularly deploy and manage WatchGuard, Fortinet FortiGate, Cisco Meraki MX, SonicWall and Sophos XGS. Choice depends on environment size, feature requirements (SD-WAN, SASE integration, native ZTNA), existing investment and budget. We will recommend what is right for your environment, with no commission-driven bias.
How does a managed firewall help with Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001?
Cyber Essentials requires a properly configured boundary firewall - documented rules, no default credentials, restricted admin access, regular review. ISO 27001 Annex A.13 covers network security controls and segregation. PCI-DSS goes further for card data environments. A managed firewall service gives you the change records, rule audits and incident logs auditors expect - rather than a snapshot the day before the assessment.
What are the most common mistakes you see in SMB firewalls?
Default or shared admin credentials, firewalls years behind on firmware, 'temporary' allow-any-any rules that became permanent, no central logging or alerting, VPNs configured before MFA was the standard, and branch office firewalls that were never adopted into the central management console. A firewall health check usually finds two or three of these on day one.
