Disaster Recovery: Why 90% of Businesses Fail After Losing Data

Did you know that a massive 90 per cent of businesses that lose data from a disaster are forced to close within two years? Or that 80 per cent of organisations with no disaster recovery plan in place close within one year of a flood, and 50 per cent of businesses that experience a computer outage close within the following five years?

The figures are sobering. If your organisation was hit by a flood, equipment outage, data loss, or any other unexpected disaster, whether natural or human-made, how well would you cope?

Most disasters strike when you least expect them, so having a disaster recovery or business continuity plan in place is essential. There is an old adage among IT professionals: Treat every piece of ICT equipment as if it will fail at some point.

The consequences of losing data or critical systems can be devastating, including but not limited to:

  • Lost customer trust and confidence; not being able to serve your customer needs.
  • Financial loss from business downtime.
  • Regulatory and compliance penalties.
  • Financial and contractual penalties for failing to meet SLAs.
  • Expensive recovery and repair costs.

It is not just your business that is affected, but those of your customers and partners too. Attitudes are maturing, with organisations realizing the importance of business resilience, but there are still many companies that fail to view business continuity as a ‘key project’. For example, a recent ComputerWeekly.com/TechTarget IT Priorities Survey for 2015, questioned 111 IT professionals in the UK about their planned IT spending priorities for 2015, and found that disaster recovery is a key project for only 45 per cent of those questioned.

When asked about the factors that hold businesses back from investing in disaster recovery and business continuity, two themes always emerge: lack of budget, funds and resources; and lack of management buy-in. Other reasons include apathy, staffing shortages, lack of time, and other priorities.
