Brief History of Red Nose Day

In 1985, Richard Curtis, Jane Tewson and friends came up with the idea to raise money that would change lives in Africa and the UK. On Christmas Day during Noel Edmond's Late Late Breakfast Show, the first ever Comic Relief was broadcast live from the Safawa refugee camp in Sudan.

Then in 1988, Lenny Henry and a group of children in Ethiopia celebrated the first ever Red Nose Day, raising over £15 million. Over 150 celebrities and comedians took part, whilst 30 million viewers tuned in.

In 2017, the British public donated an incredible £76 million, which was used to transform lives across the UK and the world's poorest communities.

Now in 2019, nearly 34 years since Comic Relief first aired, we hope to do our part and raise money for an amazing cause.
